Troubleshooting
The following fault-finding guide covers the most common problems encountered when installing and operating Monolog. Faults are grouped by symptom. Where a step refers to the Call Logging Duty, this means a remote operator with access to DIALOG or dialog.py to interrogate the unit.
NOTE
MIU Version
Several fault conditions are caused by known issues with specific MIU versions. Where a step says "check the version of the MIU and take appropriate action", refer to the MIU Versions table for identification and remedies.
Cannot Access Monolog
| Exchange | Action |
| All | Check that the battery voltage is more than 5 volts. If not, charge the batteries. |
| All | If the batteries have gone flat and Monolog was working before, make sure the access line is not incoming only and that it has the correct battery and earth conditions. |
| All | Unplug Monolog and remove the batteries. Wait 10 seconds then re-insert the batteries and plug back in. |
| All | Check that ringing can be tripped at the MIU CTRL terminals (pins 1 and 6). If not, the access line is installed incorrectly. |
| All | Check that ringing can be tripped at pins 10 and 11 of the 25-way plug on the Monolog connecting lead. If it can, contact the Help Desk. |
Customer's Line Not Clearing
| Exchange | Action |
| TXE2 / TXK1 | Remove link LK1 from the MIU. |
Customer's Line Seized When MIU Connected
| Exchange | Action |
| All | Test the MIU with wiring disconnected. There should be more than 10 MΩ between A and B, A or B to Earth, A or B to the Meter lead, and A or B to the access line. With LK1 in, there will be 10 kΩ between Earth and the Meter lead; with LK1 out, 10 MΩ. |
Line Showing Permanently Seized or Parked
| Exchange | Action |
| All | Ask the Call Logging Duty to check that the seizure threshold (VT) is set correctly to 10 volts below the line voltage (VL or B–A). |
| UXD5 | Ask the Call Logging Duty to set the seizure threshold (VT) to 35 volts if the line voltage (VL) is less than 45 volts. Line voltage on these exchanges may be as low as 38 V. |
| PBX line | Check if earth calling is in use and ask the Call Logging Duty to set Monolog appropriately. |
| All | Check that an MIU is being used and is wired into the line correctly. |
| All | Check the version of the MIU and take appropriate action. |
| All | Check that the MIU Earth is connected to a good frame earth (except UAX13, where it should be connected to the K5 make contact). |
Meter Discrepancies
| Exchange | Action |
| All | Ask the Call Logging Duty to check that the Monolog time is correct. |
| All | Check the version of the MIU and take appropriate action. |
| All except Strowger | Check that link LK1 is NOT inserted in the MIU. |
| Strowger | Check that link LK1 IS inserted in the MIU. |
| TXE2 | Check that the earth is connected to frame earth and NOT electronic earth. |
| TXE2 | Check that the ringing machine X pulse is more than 130 ms. It should be between 156 ms and 234 ms (195 ms ±20%). |
| Digital XSPM | Check that the meter lead is between 0 and 2 volts. If not, check that wiring and lightning protector modules are fitted on the MDF. |
Metering on Seizure
| Exchange | Action |
| UAX13 | Check that the earth is wired to the customer's K5 make contact and NOT to frame earth. |
No Dialled Digits, Incorrect Digits or No Outgoing Calls
| Exchange | Action |
| All | Ask the Call Logging Duty to check that Monolog is configured for the correct exchange type. |
| All | Ask the Call Logging Duty to check that the seizure threshold (VT) is set correctly to 10 volts below the line voltage (VL or B–A). |
| UXD5 | Ask the Call Logging Duty to set the threshold (VT) to 35 volts if the line voltage is less than 45 volts. Line voltage may be as low as 38 V on some line circuits. |
| PBX line | Check if earth calling is in use and ask the Call Logging Duty to set Monolog appropriately. |
| All | Check for a line fault or noisy line. |
| All | Ensure that the test call is being made from the line side of the MDF. |
| All | Check that an MIU is being used and is wired into the line correctly. |
| All | Check for loose or bad connections. |
| All | Check that the original jumper is disconnected. |
| All | Check the version of the MIU and take appropriate action. |
| UAX13 | Check that the earth is wired to the customer's K5 make contact and NOT to frame earth. |
No Metering
| Exchange | Action |
| All | Ask the Call Logging Duty to check that Monolog is configured for the correct exchange type. |
| All except Strowger | Check that link LK1 is NOT inserted in the MIU. |
| Strowger | Check that link LK1 IS inserted in the MIU. |
| System X, AXE10, TXE4, UXD5 | Check that the SPM/SEPRM/MCE is allocated to the correct customer number and not to the Monolog control line. |
| All | Check that the meter wire is terminated correctly and making good contact. |
| All | Check that the MIU earth is connected to a good frame earth (except UAX13, where it should be connected to the K5 make contact). |
| Lines without rented SPM | Confirm that there are meter pulses on the meter wire using suitable test equipment. |
| Lines with rented SPM | Use an SPM meter to confirm that there are SPM pulses on the customer's line pair. |
